The area around the intersection is lit up with lights and advertisements, and three enormous television screens are fixed on the buildings facing the intersection. These screens flash continuously throughout the day. On a man-made island in Tokyo Bay, Odaiba is a well-liked retail and leisure center. Originally known as a group of little artificial fort islands (daiba literally means 'fort'), they were constructed in the latter part of the Edo Period (1603–1868) to defend Tokyo from potential maritime attacks and in particular in reaction to Commodore Perry's gunboat diplomacy.
